Part I – Kitchen and Open Plan Family Room Colors
One of the hardest yet most important parts of creating your coastal home is your choice of color. Perhaps you are working on a whole house or maybe just a room. Either way, before you set foot in the kitchen and bath store, the tile shop or the paint store, plan your color scheme first.
First, take a look at your Pinterest Boards (or start a new Pinterest board for each room in your coastal style home). Spend a minute to note your favorite rooms. See what colors are in the family, kitchen, bedrooms or bathrooms. Since you spend most of your waking time in the kitchen and family room area, start there. Your coastal home will look fresh longer, if you stay with a neutral in one of the warm white, gray or beige hue. Neutrals work with any kitchen cabinet color whether dark or light.
In your coastal kitchen, a muted neutral color on the walls surrounding your cabinets is a great choice. People often tire of bright colors (which also can be trendy). If you’re lucky enough to have a high ceiling, paint it the lightest softest shade of sky blue.
Last year, I used Benjamin Moore’s Edgecomb Gray on our kitchen and breakfast room walls. It’s a soft neutral that works with our countertop and flooring.
If it’s an open plan floorplan, continue your neutral color from kitchen to dining and seating area. In mid-century or contemporary homes you might add a focal wall color on the TV wall in an accent color, as shown in the home designed by Carl D’Aquino.
With a wonderful neutral color on most of the walls, you can add your favorite splashes of color for accents or as an accent wall. Sea glass blue-greens, navy, or turquoise look great as accent piece colors. Use accent colors for dining room chair cushions, rugs, end tables, roman shades, or placemats and in artwork. The touch of orange adds such zest to the fabulous room above as the rug picks up the blue/green theme.
